About Me

My own journey into social work began as a middle school student in a counseling group for “at-risk” students. This experience, guided by an exceptional clinical social worker, shaped my life. He taught me to consider all facets of life when making decisions and inspired me to give back to my community. In 2000 I earned my Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree at East Carolina University, becoming the first in my family to attend college. While completing my degree, I married a Marine, which led to a diverse career providing social work services across various communities. In 2022, I earned my Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from North Carolina Central University, solidifying my path as a Licensed Clinical Social Work Associate (LCSWA).

I am licensed in the state of North Carolina (P017947).  I am also a Certified Social Worker (CSW) and a Licensed School Social Worker (LSSW) in the state of North Carolina.

I have over 24 years of social work experience in the fields of child welfare, education, and community mental health. In 2022, I began working part-time as a psychotherapist in a small private group practice.  In 2023, I stepped away from the field of school social work and began providing psychotherapy, full-time. Leveraging my relationships with other colleagues, I branched out into my own solo private practice in 2024.

Why Joyful Journey?

I carefully considered the name of my practice when I chose Joyful Journey Counseling & Consulting, PLLC.

Joyful Journey came to fruition as I thought of my dear mother-in-love, Joy.  She lived her life to the fullest.  She was an avid adventurer and life-long educator.  When she was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer, we had no idea her life's journey would end in less than a year.  As we celebrated her life, our family chose the moto for how we would approach each new day by choosing to, "Live like Joy!"  Joy showed me how to live everyday as though it was the best day ever.  I want to embody this in my service to others.  I want to help inspire my clients to find their own joy in life and to live each day like it was their best.

My Approach to Therapy

As a clinical social worker, I take a holistic approach, aiming to uncover the root causes of emotional and mental pain. I employ trauma-informed, person-centered, and strengths-based methods. My toolkit includes evidence-based approaches. I also view experiences through a trauma-focused lens, understanding how past events shape self-perception.

Using a solution-focused, strengths-based theoretical approach, I work with you to problem-solve barriers which prevent you from living your best life. I love working with adolescents, teens, young adults, and adults to help improve relationships, identify and reach personal goals, and offer a neutral safe space to process life's challenges.

Special Focus in Therapy

Emerging Adults: I have a special interest in middle school through college-aged students, especially given the impact of COVID-19 on their lives. Having witnessed firsthand the challenges they faced during school closures, as a Licensed School Social Worker, I aim to provide comprehensive support to help them regain control and empowerment in their lives. Let’s work together to cultivate “a life worth living.” I look forward to connecting with you and providing the support you need on your journey.

Military-Connected Individuals, Dependants, and Veterans: I have a unique affinity for working with military service-connected individuals and their families. Being a Marine Veteran’s wife, I comprehend the challenges and rewards tied to military life. I’m a registered provider with Star Behavioral Health Providers, specializing in the field of military psychotherapy.

LGBTQ+ Individuals, Allies, and Family Members:  I am committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive space for the LGBTQ+ community. I am a proud Allie who has had to navigate religious trauma because of my own connection to the Southern Baptist faith. I understand the complexities of navigating religious trauma and can help individuals find their path, as well as support family members who may be working through their own understanding of how they can support their loved ones going through this process.
